Character and setting are two of the elements that every short story contains. Review the work you did for this lesson, noting how although the concentration was on one element or the other, each story contained both.
Choose one of the stories, either The Bet, Bliss or Death Mother, and in a well-written essay, discuss how the author uses the elements of both character and setting to achieve his/her purpose. Be sure to create a defensible claim and support it with details from the story and textual evidence that is properly formatted and cited.
This essay is worth 60 points and will be graded using the AP Prose Analysis rubric. The initial essay will be considered a draft. You will be given commentary and feedback from your instructors. You may then revise your essay and resubmit it, at which time it will be rescored using the same rubric.
