What role do nurses have in selecting and evaluating information systems within your work environment?
In the modern world, computer technology has become the new reality. According to Farzandipour et al. (2016), computer technology has helped us to cope with the complexity and efficiency which is often required in many areas of work. In many ways, the use of computer technology has helped to improve the quality of care delivered to patients. This is because the adoption of computer technology has helped to increase the accuracy of care by reducing the medication errors which are brought about by the old files and documentation method. Today, records and assessments are stored in computers and this makes it easier to share the data of the patients from one department to the other (Ferdousi et al., 2020). A key role of nurses in selecting and evaluating the information systems is to make shared decisions. As mentioned above, the introduction of healthcare information systems has been important in improving how healthcare providers communicate from one department to the other.
New roles and responsibilities are emerging in nursing as we become aware of the profession’s information systems and the benefits of the computer as a tool to manage them more effectively. This new technology challenges us to do more than learn to operate new machinery. The complexity and cost of different computer systems and rapid changes in hospital computer technology require nursing leaders to have an understanding of many key issues. Only a sound knowledge of hospital information systems and a keen understanding of the nursing practice and the information systems which support it will enable us to obtain computer tools useful to the profession. Only by taking an active role now in the implementation of computers to clinical practice can nurses maintain control of their professional contribution to the large complex systems at present being implemented in many health care settings (Farzandipour et al., 2016).
In the selection and evaluation of information systems, nurses assess the improvement achieved from the use of these systems in healthcare to improve the quality of care. Since nurses are the stakeholders that use the information systems more, they have the responsibility of assessing whether the selected information system will be beneficial in improving the delivery and the quality of care to the patients. Another role of the nurses is to ensure that they are updated with modern technologies. Nurses must ensure that they are up- to-date with the new technology because it is through the use of modern technology that they will improve the delivery of care (Ferdousi et al., 2020). In the selection and evaluation of information systems, nurses are tasked with the role of exposing the problems within the information systems and request for necessary changes.
What strategies facilitated the implementation of the information system and/or what were the barriers to implementation?
Many strategies facilitate the implementation of information systems. One of the strategies is to carefully design interactive and engaging activities that enhanced the implementation. The use of active monitoring and evaluation is another strategy that ensures that the system is implemented as planned. According to Garner et al. (2017), building a support structure is important because it ensures that all stakeholders are involved in the activities of implementing the system successfully. Another strategy to facilitate a successful implementation of the information system is by inviting various stakeholders to support the activities. Also, engaging experts and mentors are important because it ensures that the information system is implemented in the right way.
Although many strategies facilitate the implementation of information systems, there are barriers as well which hinder or affect the implementation. One of the barriers is the high cost of acquiring information systems. As noted by Garner et al. (2017), some of the information systems are quite expensive to purchase. Another barrier is that there are high maintenance costs to the systems. Lack of technical knowledge and expertise is another challenge because nurses have to be trained in order to operate the systems effectively.
