Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan
Disasters are uncertain occurrences whose leave behind human suffering, destruction of property and loss of lives upon their occurrences. even when they may impact a small group of people they leave behind significant impacts on the hospitals that have to deal with the burden of restoring health status to the people that fall victims of the latter. To be noted is that certain disasters like eruptions, hurricanes, and floods may be predetermined, and hence, a plan put in place in order to prepare for their occurrence. In line with this, the Saint Leo University Hospital will need to consider the following initiatives in its adoption for Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan
Coordination and management
For the hospital to be adequately prepared to respond to any disaster and the misfortunes that it brings forth, there would be a need to integrate a Hospital Incidence Response Unit that will be mandated to update the organization through regular exercises and drills. The hospital will avail the necessary resources to ensure that the HIRS functions efficiently, again the hospital should consider setting aside an area specifically for disaster management. This would be an open area fitted with effective communication and safety equipment where information can be conveyed in the case of a disaster (Perry, & Lindell, 2003). The management should also coordinate the training and drilling of its workforce so that at least everyone is able to respond and handle a disaster effectively when it arises.
Command and control
It is paramount that the Saint Leo University Hospital puts in place an appropriate command and control system so that there can be the efficient response to emergency situations within the hospital setting. In doing so, the hospital can chose to activate the ICG (Incident Command Group) that will be mandated to offer directions regarding the hospital based emergencies (Paton, 2003). There also need to be a Hospital Disaster Management Committee (HDMC) that should be involved in availing information to enhance coordination and collaboration among both internal and external stakeholders.
Continuity of services
Even when in the process of adopting Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan, it is important that the hospital continue to offer quality services to its customers or rather continue with its job routine. This will be enhanced by the availability of a large and qualified workforce. It also needs put into consideration its safety and security matters as apparently ensuring safety at the organization need be the first step in the process of disaster management. This will require the university hospital to establish a security team that will be responsible for all organizational equity issues (Burns, Bradley, & Weiner, 2012. The security team will also need to work in collaboration with the ICG to enhance overall efficiency. The organization should also spell safety and security measures that need be made available to all the stakeholders together with the benefits of upholding them.

Question
In this assessment, you will explore the nurse’s role in disaster planning, preparedness, response, and recovery. You will develop a teaching tool to be used in the community that teaches community members how to be prepared for a variety of disasters common to your state.

Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan
Part 1: Disaster Response
Public health officials can play a huge part in disaster planning and emergency preparedness. In this part of the assignment, analyze disaster response and emergency preparedness.
Identify nursing roles and responsibilities during each phase of disaster management. Consider:
- Planning
- Preparedness
- Response
- Recovery
Summarize your findings regarding roles and responsibilities.
Evaluate your community or state’s plan for preparedness and disaster management. Summarize your findings.
Create a teaching tool for your family or the community. Include the following:
- How to plan an emergency kit, or “go bag”
- How to do regular drills of your evacuation plan
- How you will communicate with each other in the family

Include at least 1 peer-reviewed and 2 evidence-based references and an APA-formatted reference page.
Format your assignment as a 1-page handout.
Part 2: Disaster Planning, Preparedness, and Response
Research disaster planning, preparedness, and response in your community.
Develop 10 interview questions for use with first responders about local community disaster planning, preparedness, and response to use in community interviews. Include questions about how responders work with the community.
Interview workers and leaders at the following community locations in person or online from:
- Local fire station
- Local emergency room
