Self-Assessment Of Leadership Skills

Self-Assessment Of Leadership Skills

Self-Assessment Of Leadership Skills

Introduction

To improve health outcomes and sustainability, nurses who can develop and demonstrate care management competencies are essential (Garca et al., 2020). In order to promote a high-quality care environment, nurse supervisors must possess specific vital characteristics. Given the impact of the social and economic changes documented in the recent past, particularly the more significant movement of individuals from different cultures, nurse manager competencies are essential to excellent service delivery in today’s healthcare environment (Garca et al., 2020). Providing regular healthcare presents various difficulties for nurses, such as dealing with patients from other cultures, which calls for a high level of understanding, tolerance, and staff excellence. I recently completed the necessary steps to develop the nurse manager competencies required by the American Association of Nurse Executives (AONE) for success in the provision of care services (AONE, 2015). This essay evaluates my leadership abilities in light of the AONE nurse manager competencies, highlighting my existing strengths, areas for improvement, and a strategy for enhancing both my strengths and weaknesses.

  1. Examination of Leadership Qualities

Building relationships through dialogue

As a nurse and leader in the setting of care service delivery, I shine in the areas of communication and relationship development. Effective communication with patients and other members of the care team, relationship management in the care environment, working with a varied group of individuals, and involving others in decision-making and care planning are just a few of the leadership skills and talents that have been acquired. Although having these skills and capacity areas under control, there are still some that I need to get to grips with quickly in order to avoid having an impact on my personal and professional performance as a nurse manager.

  1. b) Understanding of the healthcare industry

Regarding the knowledge of the healthcare environment, the skills and abilities acquired include a solid understanding of clinical practice, patient care service models, governance, and healthcare policy, as well as the use of the evidence-based practice to raise standards of care. Nevertheless, as we covered in section II, I still need to acquire and master other abilities.

Leadership c

For the care environment to be managed effectively and to affect the work of other practitioners and teams, nurse managers must have strong leadership skills. Developing critical thinking skills, applying systems thinking, managing change, and preparing for a shift in leadership are just a few of the abilities and skills that come with leadership. The efficient use of succession planning and guaranteeing service continuity are a few of the lacking abilities that will require future growth.

professional conduct

Professionalism is equally crucial to team effectiveness, patient outcomes, and other people’s interactions with the nurse manager. Professional and personal accountability, the value of ethical practice, and evidence-based practice at various levels of care are among the skills and talents learned in this domain. Even with the expertise gained in the many objective areas, a few additional abilities that impact nurse management professionalism must be mastered.

  1. e) Business skills

Healthcare financing, strategic management, the significance of information technology in management, and the necessity of human resource management and development are among the skills and talents taught within this field. It is essential to build a few other abilities because managing business skills is necessary for effective practice.

  1. Communication and relationship development current strengths and improvement opportunities based on the self-assessment

Due to the significance of relationships and service delivery networks, communication and relationship development are essential in the healthcare sector. The following are some of the present strengths:

the ability to manage relationships effectively, particularly the ability to resolve conflicts when they arise

The capacity to collaborate with people from different backgrounds, whether they are patients or other healthcare professionals, and

mastering joint decision-making on matters involving end-of-life care, particularly with patients and their families.

Notwithstanding the strengths identified, I also found several competencies that require improvement, such as the following:

The capacity to shape others’ actions, community engagement, and the development and cultivation of scholarly

  1. b) Understanding of the healthcare industry

mastery of models for providing patient care services

governance and healthcare policy capacity, and

usng evidence-based practice to enhance patient care

Several skills and abilities, including the following, require further development, as mentioned in the evaluation section.

knowledge of job design, outcome measurement, patient safety expertise, and knowledge of quality improvement measures, and risk

Leadership c

The review shows that the following are some of the area’s present strengths:

Learning how to think critically, applying systems thinking, managing change, and preparing for a change in leadership

The following are some of the areas that require more refinement and development:

  1. d) Professionalism, which is crucial in managing the care environment, requires the mastery of fundamental and critical thinking abilities, succession planning, and effective change management.

Due to recent progress in both personal and professional development, the following strengths have been mastered:

Accountability on a professional and personal level, the value of ethical behavior, and evidence-based practice in various care settings.

To ensure the best possible service delivery in the future, several areas of growth still require further development. The following are some of the growth possibilities:

Making use of career planning, incorporating evidence-based management techniques, and actively participating in professional e) Business skills

As was noticed during the review, historical growth and development show the significance of past strengths. These advantages include the following:

Strategic management, knowledge of healthcare financing

the importance of human resource management, the use of information technologies in management, and

The following abilities and qualities listed below should be given priority in the opportunities for continued development in the pitch.

The use of strategic management, staff development for teams and individuals, and healthcare marketing

III. Action Plan to Build on Strengths and Address Weaknesses

Using the knowledge and abilities obtained at every possible opportunity is the best approach to move forward with employing the many talents developed under the five nurse manager competencies.

Opportunity. The actions to be taken are as follows: step 1: apply the data on existing abilities and areas for improvement; step 2: collaborate with role models, other skilled practitioners, and nurse managers at the current organization and elsewhere; step 3: assess the development attained through relationships (Waxman et al., 2017). Step 4 of the process involves identifying the knowledge gaps that still need to be filled and the skills that still need to be developed in light of the newfound competence.

Step 5 is the final phase, which involves finding the best means to acquire the abilities and information required to flourish as a nurse manager and practitioner. Reading practice and professional books and materials, networking with mentors and other skilled nurse managers, and joining professional organizations are all resources that can be used during the growth process and journey. Taking formal and informal courses that concentrate on the many skill areas at the organizational level and beyond is another essential resource (Waxman et al., 2017).

Conclusion

Nurse managers play a crucial role in providing patients with care services and are critical in assuring the quality of service delivery. The evaluation and the actions that followed showed the performance levels at the time, the positive aspects, and the areas that could use better. As outlined in the action plan, it is essential to take the necessary actions to cultivate one’s existing knowledge and skills while also improving one’s mastery of the knowledge and abilities that still demand improvement.
