Using the Walden Library

Where can you find evidence to inform your thoughts and scholarly writing? Throughout your degree program, you will use research literature to explore ideas, guide your thinking, and gain new insights. As you search the research literature, it is important to use resources that are peer-reviewed and from scholarly journals. You may already have some favorite online resources and databases that you use or have found useful in the past. For this Discussion, you explore databases available through the Walden Library.

Begin searching for a peer-reviewed article that pertains to your practice area and interests you.By Day 3 of Week 6

Post the following:

Using proper APA formatting, cite the peer-reviewed article you selected that pertains to your practice area and is of particular interest to you and identify the database that you used to search for the article. Explain any difficulties you experienced while searching for this article. Would this database be useful to your colleagues? Explain why or why not. Would you recommend this database? Explain why or why not.

By Day 6 of Week 6

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering suggestions/strategies for working with this database from your own experience, or offering ideas for using alternative resources.

SAMPLE MAIN POST

As a nurse, I have personally found benefits to the application of a medical cannabis regimen to patients that suffer from mental health diagnoses. This is one of the main reasons I wanted to research more on this for not only the basic knowledge of if this can even be done by prescribing APRN’s, but how, and the legal indicators per state. Conclusively, what I came to understand was that APRN’s do not particularly prescribe medical marijuana, but some states allow them to “authorize” patients who meet diagnosis criteria to participate in the state’s medical marijuana program. It is considered more of a certification than a prescription. I further found that my state of New Mexico is an eligible state for this which made me even more interested in furthering my studies of the laws while in this PMHNP program. “APRNs who choose to authorize medical marijuana are strongly urged to read the law and regulations and the nurse practice acts in their state. (See Key aspects of medical marijuana laws for states in which APRNs can authorize for patients.) The National Council of State Legislatures provides links to the legislation for each state at www.ncsl.org/research/health/state-medical-marijuana- laws.aspx#1.”, (Kaplan, 2015).

The topic of APRN’s prescribing controlled substances regarding opiate withdrawal substances like suboxone, benzodiazepines and others was easier to identify in access with the database CINAHL/Medline combines search. I have been more so curious since I had started considering PMHNP school of the laws and regulations of APRN’s prescribing abilities and scope with prescribing cannabis. This was a more narrowed down search and I had to use advanced search engines in addition to limiting the search to academic/scholarly journals and within the 5 year time frame of evidence, as well as the Boolean phrase, “APRN and Marijuana” to get the topic content I was searching for. Without the advanced search criteria, I had dead ends that specified “no results found”.

I prioritized the databases for topic search of this very narrow search to Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature with Medline and the standard CINAHL. I would recommend this more extensive database to my colleagues as it would have access to a more- wide range of peer reviewed articles, evidence-based practice case studies and systematic reviews. For the current and future needs of our research as scholarly writers and graduate level nurses these are the type of documents that will serve us with the greatest purpose for what we are applying to our practice specialties some-day. Not just the credibility but the structure of the articles that we use will give the best tools to apply to practice and accurately claim that we are implementing most current evidence-based practices. According to a study of databases published by Biomedcentral, (2015), “We also found some indication that CINAHL had the potential to provide unique studies for systematic reviews. Eleven reviews, where we were able to recheck all the databases used by the original review authors, had included a study that was uniquely identified from the CINAHL database.”
