As a nurse, I have directly observed the advantages of applying a medical cannabis regimen to patients who have been diagnosed with mental health conditions. This is one of the main reasons I wanted to learn more about it in order to understand not only the fundamentals of whether prescribing APRNs is even possible but also how and the state-specific legal requirements. In conclusion, I learned that APRNs do not often prescribe medicinal marijuana but that certain states permit them to “authorize” patients who satisfy the requirements for a qualifying condition to take part in the state’s medical marijuana program. The distinction between a certification and a prescription is blurred. I discovered that my home state of New Mexico qualifies for this, which piqued my curiosity to continue my legal studies while enrolled in the PMHNP program. “APRNs who decide to approve medical marijuana are asked to carefully review their state’s laws, regulations, and nurse practice acts. With the use of the database CINAHL/Medline combined search, it was simpler to locate information on the subject of APRNs prescribing banned substances in relation to opiate withdrawal medications like suboxone, benzodiazepines, and others. When I began thinking about attending PMHNP school, I became increasingly interested in the rules and restrictions governing APRNs’ ability to prescribe cannabis and the range of their practice. In order to get the information I was looking for, I had to do a more focused search and use advanced search engines in addition to restricting my search to academic and scientific journals, the 5-year period covered by the evidence, and the Boolean expression “APRN and Marijuana.” Without the sophisticated search parameters, I ran into “no results found” dead ends.

I prioritized the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature with Medline and the conventional CINAHL as the databases for this extremely specific topic search. Because it would have access to a wider variety of peer-reviewed publications, evidence-based practice case studies, and systematic reviews, I suggest to my colleagues this more comprehensive database. These are the kinds of materials that, for our present and future research needs as academic authors and graduate-level nurses, will be most helpful when we apply them to our practice specializes in the future. In addition to trustworthiness, the articles’ organization will provide the greatest instruments for practice and truthfully state that we are using the most recent evidence-based approaches. “We also found some indication that CINAHL has the potential to produce unique studies for systematic reviews,” writes Biomedcentral in a 2015 examination of databases. A study that was specifically recognized from the CINAHL database was included in eleven reviews, for which we were able to recheck all the databases used by the original review authors.
