Labeling and Ethical conduct

Labeling and Ethical conduct

Labeling and Ethical conduct

DQ 1

Labels are often used in schools to identify a concern or group a student belongs to, but labels sometimes have negative consequences on students’ learning. What are some of the consequences of labeling? What are some alternatives to labeling students’ cultural, ethnic, gender, and learning differences?

Labeling kids can have both good and negative effects, depending on the context in which the label is used. It may be important to label pupils in order to provide the help that students require in order to achieve academic and emotional success in their respective learning environments. In order for students to receive the assistance they require and individualized instruction, educators need to label students or be aware of the labels that are associated with particular students. This allows educators to provide students with the additional assistance or individualized education plan that is necessary to ensure the student’s success. Labeling a kid as having a mental illness might be beneficial, but it can also have some detrimental effects not just on the educators, family members, and classmates of the student, but also on the student themselves.

Depending on the label, the student can experience feelings of discouragement, or both the student and the instructor might lower their expectations or objectives for what they are capable of doing. The youngster may also acquire a healthy sense of self-esteem and encounter problems with classmates, such as being bullied or being excluded. As teachers, it is our duty to encourage and assist our pupils in achieving academic achievement, and we must also give careful consideration to the ways in which affixing a label to a pupil may be useful and advantageous, as well as a positive way to single out that pupil.

A teacher learns that there is a social media group dedicated to his class that he is unaware of, where students can share notes and discuss their experiences. He visits the group and asks to be a member. After becoming a member, several of his students send a friend request to him on social media. He accepts and begins to interact with his students in a personal manner. The teacher posts on his social media account, quite often, sharing photos of him with his girlfriend and at bars with his friends. Provide feedback to the teacher to support ethical conduct and address this situation. Include evidence from the Model Code of Ethics for Educators and Professional Dispositions of Learners.

Reaching out to students through a social media group that is specifically dedicated to the teacher’s class is an excellent method that the educator may utilize to be able to connect with his pupils. He would be able to participate with them in significant conversations, as well as assist them if they had a question about a subject and required further explanation. I believe that it would be a terrific approach to reach the instructor and classmates for further aid and support given the current state of the globe and the epidemic that is now taking place. However, it is not suitable for him to be friends with his pupils on social media and he should not accept friend requests from them. As educators, we are already required to be aware of what we post, but we should always maintain any interaction we have with students professional and focus on teaching as the primary purpose of such relationships. “Using social media ethically, transparently, and primarily for teaching objectives,” as stated in the Model Code of Ethics for Educators’ Principle V, is something that I would want to bring to the teacher’s attention (NASDTEC, 2015). In accordance with the same idea, it is also said that we are required to create separate and professional virtual accounts. In this manner, we can keep our personal lives and our academic lives distinct from one another, which will help us prevent any further problems that may occur.
