Reflection: Society

Reflection: Society

Reflection: Society

In this paper, I will describe how this course has helped me understand more the role of Diversity in today’s society and explain how critically analyzing Diversity adds value to interaction with people in various contexts. It wasn’t until this course that I fully understood how big of a role diversity plays in our society. Our society today is full of individuals from different ideologies, religious beliefs, ethnicity, race, etc., and accepting and appreciating every individual’s uniqueness is the importance of Diversity. For instance, circling back to the week 1 discussion, we discussed our understanding of Diversity and its role in our field of work. I mentioned my understanding and the importance of Diversity in HR; however, only in the resources reading did I learn that Diversity also increases career success. “Learning about and from Diversity better prepares you for today’s work world. America’s workforce is now more diverse than at any other time in its history and will grow increasingly diverse.

Moreover, work today occurs in a global economy characterized by greater economic interdependence among nations, more international trading (imports/exports), multinational corporations, international travel, and almost instantaneous worldwide communication.” (Thompson, 2022). For instance, circling back to the week 2 discussion, I was unaware that most organizations worried more about backlash than making unconscious bias training voluntary for their employees. Not only did this course help me understand how Diversity proposes new ideas/ experiences, but it also brings people together and learn from one another.

When we are critically analyzing Diversity, we are eliminating any personal biases about different groups of people as well as helping us dismiss any negative stereotypes. As Katherine W. Phillips stated, “Diversity adds value to a workplace as it opens communication across race, class, gender, and other social distinctions. When people are forced to confront and reconcile their differences, social equality is increased, and bias is reduced. Analyzing the effects of Diversity is important for monitoring social change and progress. When people are uncomfortable with their social differences, they are not open to communicating about important topics related to social differentiations.” We can take the tragic murder of George Floyd, for example; his death was a big eye-opener for some white people. I recently was caught up in discussion with an (ignorant white) co-worker who believed his encounter with the office was a very sad incident and didn’t see any racism in it. I had to bring different ideas to his prospect so he could understand the situation from another point of view: From a different position. If this was before this class, I know I would have approached the topic differently. That said, America has, and it’s continuing to become more diverse than ever, both in the workforce and society or public, and it seeks more Diversity.
