The two pieces of work I chose are the Sydney Opera House, Jorn Utzon, and Horse in Motion, Eadweard Muybridge. To describe the Sydney Opera House I will be using the formal theory and for the Horse in Motion, I will be using the expressive theory. Both of these artists are very different but were able to appeal to people through their work in different ways. One artist used Architecture and the other used photography. Both of these artists were different, but both were extremely talented and innovative.

I found the story of how Jorn Utzon became the architect of the Sydney Opera House very interesting. By entering a contest and being chosen to design a masterpiece and change the world of Architecture. He was announced the winner of the ‘International competition for a national opera house at Bennelong Point, Sydney’. He used his vision to turn the City of Sydney into an international city. The Sydney Opera House is a building that was home to culture, the arts, and performances from around the world. There were three separate buildings in the design, the largest building being the concert hall, the second being the opera theater and the last in front of both is a separate restaurant. All of these buildings combined both science and art. It was greatly influenced by the ancient Mayan and Aztec Pyramids. One of the ways science was involved in the creation of the roof, which consisted spherical shape for different size roofs and a combination of a more spherical curvature and adding ribbed vaulting. There were so many architectural elements involved in the structure of the Sydney Opera House. He was able to show many different views of design and details. His artwork involved technical skills that were never thought of before and ended up creating an amazing structure that amazed people.

Sydney Opera House would be one of the first major projects designed using computer-aided (CAD) and presenting major revolutionary architectural concepts. It was also one of the first major projects, which employed the use of computers to analyze internal load effects. It took fourteen years to complete and opened in 1973. Since then it has hosted many performances.

When we look at Horse in Motion, Eadweard Muybridge. The photographer influenced art with him by bringing out the true emotion of the painting through expression. He was the first artist to produce photographs showing the muscle and scientific anatomy of a racehorse as it was running in motion. This also motivated Eadweard Muybridge to produce the first primitive cinematic work. He was able to effectively express his work using multiple paintings of a horse in motion. This would have been virtually impossible without a snapshot of the action. It is so critical for an artist to appeal to someone’s emotions. Connecting with them through expression and having the artwork appeal to them and spark their interest. He truly changed photography and cinematic work by believing in his work and promoting it in a way that appealed to people.

I felt both artists were very different, but alike in many ways. They believed in their work and did their best to showcase it. One through detail and design and the other through innovative imagination and emotion. This is why I chose the formal theory and the expressive theory. Both of these theories describe art in different ways. I think most artists can be described by using all theories, but certain theories do a better job of describing an artist’s work.

When focusing on the Sydney Opera House, I used the formal theory. This is because it focuses on the work’s composition and use of formal elements, use of formal elements. One of the reasons for using this theory to describe the Sydney Opera House was due to the Architecture of Science and Art. The influence of the pyramids provided inspiration in the design of the structure. The shapes and designs show how science was involved. It played a crucial role in structural design. Even though I used the formal theory to describe the Sydney Opera House, there is a slight emotional connection when you look at how the architect was chosen to be the designer of the project.

The expressive theory has three key concepts, which are imagination, genius, and emotion. In the artwork by Horse in Motion, Eadweard Muybridge. The three key concepts associated with this movement are imagination, genius, and emotion. Through photography and cinematic he captured the imagination and pure genius by creating objects in motion. He captured a person’s emotion by showing people how amazing photography can be used in imaginative ways.

Critiquing artwork can be difficult, trying to choose the best way to describe and appeal to people. When being an Art Critic, you want to always take time in describing the work and the artist. Showing how the artist connects to the work and how they were inspired to create a piece whether it is architecture, Photography, or Painting. A part of critiquing is using the concepts from different theories to describe the Art.
