Career Readiness Challenges Faced by Managers
Managers have a plethora of difficulties with professional preparedness. The textbook lists technical advancements, ethical issues, a diverse workforce, and globalization as among the problems (Uhl-Bien & Piccolo, 2021). Each of these has a varied impact on a person, and some people feel one issue to be heavier than another.
Technology has proliferated throughout our lifetime. I recall playing arithmetic games on the colourful Mac computers as a child and playing Oregon Trail at school, as well as the dial-up tones and being amazed by the potential of this strange gadget. There will be computers running databases, business-use APIs, and much more in just twenty years. Keeping up with technology may be challenging, especially for a generation that did not see its rapid development. Making sure that my staff still have roles and jobs that cannot be readily replaced by a computer program is a challenge I face as a manager every day. As someone who can keep up with changes that occur frequently, I take satisfaction in my ability to adjust my life to fit new systems and procedures. The challenge I face is making sure my employees have a resource to turn to if they are unable to be the same and ramp up quickly. If someone is unable to keep up with workplace technology, a difficult conversation about whether they will be able to stay and perform their duties both effectively and efficiently must be started.
Beyond only coping with technology, maintaining a diverse workforce and ethical issues present additional challenges. Most people would agree that recent events have brought attention to the value of work ethics and diversity in an organization. As a manager, this is something I try to achieve, even if it can be challenging to maintain at times. You are focused on being a fair and decent person in the eyes of my coworkers, but I also need to make sure that they are being decent and fair to one another as well. Depending on the circumstance, it may seem like babysitting an adult to ensure that they adhere to our ethics, vision and policy, but doing so is in the best interests of the team and the employees. Being fair to all coworkers and applicants is crucial, and diversity plays a huge part in this. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it can be simple to make a snap judgment about a variety of traits or form an initial image of someone just by looking at them. A healthy work atmosphere can always be maintained by ensuring that everyone is treated equally; it is just difficult to do so. Especially when going through the onboarding process.
I became familiar with the term “globalization” while taking classes at GCU. I was aware of what it was, but I was unaware that it had a specific name and definition. Since I do work for a multinational enterprise, what the textbook says about big businesses not using the word “overseas” also applies to me at work. Some of the responsibilities in our department have been “outsourced” to other nations since doing so would be more cost-effective, but doing so can be unsettling for our current employees who worry that their position might be eliminated in order to cut expenses. It is never easy to have this conversation or explain the situation, especially when we are only adding new branches and not outsourcing to another business.
All of these things present readiness challenges, but managers who can rise to the occasion are successful.
