I would contact the parents or other family members to find out their preferred methods of communication as the first step in preparing for the meeting and whether I should be ready to bring an interpreter if they feel uncomfortable conversing in English. Additionally, getting to know the family and their culture outside of the classroom is crucial. The use of visuals in this discussion is crucial. Having pictures that families can see may help them comprehend some difficult-to-explain school subjects. I always start these conversations with positive traits and student strengths since it’s crucial in this type of discussion to establish trust and a solid relationship.
Another important resource is suggestions for real-world ways parents may help their children, such as taking them to the zoo if they’re studying animals in science. This will enable them to provide their child with real-world experiences they can discuss and share in their tongue. Communicating clearly with kids and their families who speak English as a second language is crucial. As a result, I will make sure that every family in my class knows how much I appreciate and cherish having a diverse group of students.
