Personal Ethical Philosophy about  John Doe, who uses a Cloaking app that bypasses Copyright TextBooks

My ethical tenets are honesty and self-control. The ability to regulate one’s emotions and actions to act morally and ethically by avoiding anything unfavorable that would tempt one to do so is a quality that is crucial for a person to possess. Being honest is important to me since I do not particularly appreciate lying. The natural law theory and Aristotle’s virtue ethics/golden rule were the two theories with which I most strongly agreed. According to the natural law hypothesis, people are born with instincts that warn them when something is moral or immoral and any unnatural conduct is immoral (Rachels & Rachels, 2019). Aristotle placed great emphasis on a person’s moral character and virtues. The makings of a decent person will emerge from repeated acts of virtue (Rachels & Rachels, 2019).

My theory holds that John Doe intentionally did something wrong by downloading copyrighted textbooks while attempting to conceal his conduct by utilizing a cloaking program. His behavior was improper and dishonest. He ought to have been held to a higher standard because he was a nurse. As a nurse, he has a duty of beneficence and justice to be kind, fair, and non-harmful (Gaines, 2020). He was not behaving in a way that belied his good character. He disregarded and disobeyed his religious principles by engaging in illegal actions. A person will accept what the head of their church or religion says if they are faithful to it (Rachels & Rachels). People should not tell lies, according to the Bible. Because of their faith, Christians are more likely to be trustworthy (Xu et al., 2018). According to the veil of ignorance, John Doe could have obtained assistance because he is poor. He could have avoided acting immorally and unethically and looked into resources that could help him with the things he needed so that he did not have to do evil things to save money if he had greater self-control. John Doe ran the risk of being expelled from school, spending time in jail, or losing his nursing license.

Fairness is how the veil of ignorance approaches justice. According to the social contract, people are expected to know about science and fairness rather than their personal situations. Everyone should enjoy the same freedoms while they are covered by ignorance. Equal benefits should accrue to everybody. To ensure their well-being, the low-income or impoverished should receive assistance first (D’Amico, 2019). The veil of ignorance claims that because John Doe has a lower income, poor people should get assistance. John Doe should therefore be able to apply for some help to acquire textbook assistance or help with other expenses.

Initial Post Instructions

Some people believe that you can tell who a person is by what they do when no one is looking. Let’s look at the following case. John Doe, a nurse, has downloaded an application to her phone that allows him to download copyrighted textbooks for a nursing course (that Doe is going to take) without his Internet Service Provider knowing it. The application is called “Cloak,” as in a cloak of invisibility (a hooded coat one wears to make it so others cannot see you). The application disguises his phone and makes it so the information on it is inaccessible. John is aware that other people who are of lower socioeconomic status (like him) also use this software program for the same reason (and to save money). John Doe knows that his religion forbids him from using this application to download in this manner. John Doe is focused on his own economic situation and does not consider the publisher, author, and others involved in the books. Think about a course of social action; what social values should be used to address this moral issue and conflict.

Create a personal ethical philosophy and explain from which philosophy or philosophies (it must include at least one of the following: virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, or social contract ethics) you created it and why the contents are important and meaningful for you. List its precepts.

  • Take your personal ethical philosophy statement and use it to work through John Doe’s case. What is moral and immoral per your theory?
  • How would the veil of ignorance or a different theory of justice address John Doe’s case?
