Cultural Competency vs. Diversity
The capacity to display more than one human cultural behaviour is known as being transcultural. It aids nursing students in changing the way they think so they can become culturally competent nurses who can treat patients safely and ethically (Andrews et al., 2020). It is challenging for nurses to be completely knowledgeable about every culture because there are more cultures than ever. Nevertheless, they can create excellent cultural assessments, interact with people from various cultures, and adhere to a structured process for providing culturally competent care. The transcultural interprofessional practice paradigm addresses the requirement for good communication, teamwork between patients and clients, and collaboration between members of care team members et al., 2020).
Cultural competency comprises manuals and organizations concentrating on delivering competent care and rules directing organizations to make sure they operate well in the different cultural interactions. It is a process that makes people and organizations react to members of all cultures with greater decency and efficacy (Greene-Moton & Meredith Minkler, 2020). They will self-evaluate as part of cultural competency to realize that their culture is not superior to all others. As a result, they will start realizing and respecting cultural similarities and differences. Danso (2016) claims that including cultural competency shows that social work is cognizant of disparities.
Cultural humility refers to the recognition by practitioners of their limitations in comprehending the worldview and culture of their clients. In order to create a partnership with the community that benefits both the individuals and the target group requires a commitment to reviewing and resolving power imbalances within the wider group (Danso, 2016).
Because I have been exposed to various cultural values and can practice nursing in a culturally competent manner without making them feel inferior or as though my culture is superior to theirs, I have learned most of my clients’ opinions from them. I also understand that cultural differences are not a challenge that needs to be overcome. Finding an interpreter was difficult for me because of the linguistic barrier. Due to the lack of a common language to interact with them, people from different backgrounds prevented me from fully understanding my client’s demands.
In conclusion, being fully culturally competent in a different culture is still challenging since it is getting cultural beliefs and values. Since it is very challenging, they raise awareness among practitioners and challenge the institutions by identifying all the injustices to establish a free and just world; cultural competence and humility aid in self-realization.
