Team Norms and Diversity
Team norms are guidelines or expectations for members’ conduct (Uhl-Bien, Schermerhorn, & Osborn, 2014). In essence, team member behavior is what is expected of them. When someone doesn’t follow them, it can compromise the group’s ability to function as a unit. Team disruptions may result from it. Knowing what is expected of you as a team member is crucial.
A group may benefit or suffer from diversity. People with varied backgrounds tend to have varying expectations. For instance, in the office, we consider ourselves a team at work, yet a few individuals need to fit in better. One can be described as severe and cranky. They lack humor and appear to hold the rest of us in lower regard. However, I don’t believe that is the real issue; rather, it is simply that they are from a different culture. But it can undermine the spirit of the team.
