The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Stephen R. Covey’s book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has a wealth of information to aid readers in raising their performance in pursuit of their objectives. It is written in the first person to allow Covey to explain his conviction that each person’s perception shapes how they perceive the world. People must therefore change themselves to change their circumstances, and changing one’s perception is the first step in bringing about personal transformation. Everyone aspires to succeed and accomplish particular objectives, which motivates them to recognize and use all beneficial habits.
The nature of success and how people who have attained outward success nevertheless struggle to create lasting relationships with others are discussed in the beginning. According to the author, people’s perceptions shape how they perceive the world. As a result, their ability to alter themselves significantly impacts their ability to change a circumstance. The book’s substance is validated by extensive referencing to earlier works regarding achievement, which gives it credibility. According to the scholar’s comparative analysis, success in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was based on character ethics, whereas success in the present world is based on personal ethics. The reader can learn from this context that it is critical to constantly reflect on one’s behaviour in order to change it for the better and achieve success.
This book also focuses on how people become perplexed when they feel threatened by the success of those around them. Ultimately, they search for quick fixes to succeed as soon as possible. However, as Covey points out, this is disastrous because it undermines societal morals, ethics, and values. In order to save money and time, individuals often seek shortcuts. However, they are not the ideal options because they only help people achieve short-term objectives and do not provide solutions to complex issues (Covey 87).
The first three habits involve being proactive, starting with the end in mind, and setting priorities in order. As the first step toward success, they offer advice on developing self-mastery and going from reliance to independence (Forshaw and Covey 65). Think win-win, attempt to understand first to be understood, and then synergize in the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, which require transitioning from independence to interdependence and promoting cooperation, collaboration, and communication. Sharpening the saw, the final habit, calls for ongoing development. Each habit is essential to success, so anyone reading Covey’s book should become proficient in it and put its teachings into practice.
I took away from this book that people’s initial mental self-fulfilling prophecy is the response. As a result, individuals experience increased victimization, which makes them uncontrollable. People in this state need help to think clearly, leading them to choose quick cuts. A person should become proactive and accept responsibility to prevent failing because of being reactive. This will help the person react positively to a circumstance.
Moreover, Covey’s theory that people should alter their perceptions to change their circumstances is valid. The seven habits are the foundation for all successful initiatives since they improve a person’s capacity for initiative. The author argues that self-renewal is crucial for allowing people to advance in growth.
