The Importance of Cultural Competency in Healthcare
The nation’s growing diversity presents possibilities and challenges for the healthcare system, policymakers, and healthcare professionals to develop and provide culturally competent services. Reynolds (2014) defines cultural competency as the capacity of individuals and organizations to engage with societies of all faiths, sexual orientations, racial backgrounds, classes, and cultures in a way that distinguishes and upholds the value of communities, tribes, and families while safeguarding and preserving each individual’s dignity.
It is crucial to consider the health information that pertains to the target groups while targeting them. Understanding and accepting the differences in racial, linguistic, and ethnic features are important. Public health authorities must be aware of cultural norms, and emergency managers will be able to do so. By doing so, they may improve the standard of care provided to patients by being aware of cultural norms and prejudices.
Social media is one of the best ways to reach a target audience with culturally and linguistically appropriate material. Social media can be used to disseminate urgent public health messages during public health emergencies. According to a study by Public Health Emergency (2017), social media helps to spread information in real-time, guarantees that individuals receive information wherever they are, and helps to build relationships with the public. After creating a message to protect the public’s health, disseminating it via social media will help a company respond to emergencies quickly.
Therefore, gaining cultural and linguistic proficiency will help healthcare executives and leaders better meet the needs of their diverse populations, provide better healthcare services, and improve health outcomes both during and after a disaster. However, a successful cultural competency program should cover all disaster or public health emergency phases, including preparation, recovery, and response.
