Individuals and organizations can benefit from constructive conflict because it draws attention to a pressing issue that needs to be resolved. Constructive conflict enhances the likelihood that the issue will be resolved for the benefit of the individual or the organization, which is advantageous to both. Additionally, people can learn how to modify their behaviour when making concessions and resolving disputes. Businesses and organizations can draw attention to issues by engaging in disputes or providing constructive criticism. Destructive conflict can produce negative environments, harming the individual and the organization. Sometimes it will also result in a hostile environment and subpar productivity. It is nearly impossible for a group or individual to cooperate during a damaging conflict. Destructive conflict may be interpersonal (destructive emotional conflict) or substantive (destructive substantive conflict) when it prevents a team from achieving its intended aim.
In order to avoid conflict and end dysfunctional confrontations, various tactics can be utilized. By using the decreasing differences method, issues can be solved. This tactic urges individuals to change their interpersonal conduct and mindset. Encouraging group members to value and appreciate one another and tolerating diversity is another tactic for reducing conflict. Face-to-face conflict management techniques or indirect, more structural techniques can also be used to resolve dysfunctional conflict. Relationship conflict is an emotional conflict that results from opposing ideas, communication preferences, and moral standards. Creating more inclusive categories by recategorization, recategorization, or cross-categorization is a tactic to lessen apparent inequalities. Conflict over status results from power imbalances when one artist believes they are better than others and undercuts their authority. Functional conflicts can be lessened by fostering environments that encourage people to use their differences to create productive tension. Find a point of agreement to ease the tension if it is too high (Uhl-bien et al., 2021).
Avoidance can be utilized when a problem is minor. When a situation affects others more than you do, you may make an accommodation. It is possible to resolve complex problems temporarily by compromise. The authoritative command may be utilized when immediate and decisive action is required or when unpopular acts must be performed. When time and resources allow (Uhl-bien et al., 2021), real conflict resolution is achieved through cooperation and problem-solving.
