Communication Failure
I recently left a business that saw it needed to enhance internal communications. You may claim that the intended agenda was to communicate the need for improved communication. A survey was distributed to all employees to get feedback and set priorities for the required actions to produce improvement. However, they needed a better approach to interacting with their staff, which was consistent with the original issue.
To ensure the leadership team took their survey feedback seriously, memos were emailed to every employee. There were promises to create improved communication strategies. However, senior leaders reprimanded front-line managers at management meetings and urged them to improve employee relations. The company’s concept of “communication” was unclear; no communication training was offered, no rules governing the subjects they believed should be discussed, and no tracking tools were created to determine the degree of change. In addition, there was no agreed intended goal.
A senior management team member had recently left the company before I left. The corporation decided not to handle the matter, rather than assuring extensive and regular information surrounding his leaving. Instead, it was left up to the workers to decide whether it was a forced or voluntary termination. Without contact, workers started fabricating their versions of events, which led to the rapid spread of rumors.
The corporation suppressed information from its employees, completely going against what had been promised. Due to this, people lost faith in the organization and its communications, which weakened the entire communication strategy (Vaughn, 2012).
