Case study 3.3 Andy’s Recipe

1) What accounts for Andy’s success in the restaurant business?

What I believe accounts for Andy’s success is his ability to keep people coming back. You can try to improve processes and find ways to suck more money out of the business as much as you want. If you do not have a customer, however, all of that means nothing. Customers will find other restaurants to go to if they are not happy with yours. I believe that his ability to make people enjoy their time and ensuring the food quality stays at a high standard gives him the success that he has had.

2) From a skills perspective, how would you describe the three managers, Kelly, Danielle, and Patrick? What does each of them need to do to improve his or her skills?

I would describe Kelly’s skills as just overall good at what she does. She enjoys what she does, and she is a great for the kitchen. To improve, I believe she needs to work on her personal relation skills. She needs to be able to be a team player and get along with her co-workers.

Danielle is also very good at what she does. Customer service is her thing, and that is perfect for her working directly with the customers. Danielle is not the best with the numbers side of the business, so this is what she needs to work on. You have to be profitable to maintain the business so it is crucial that she does learn the business side.

Patrick is almost the opposite of Danielle. He is great with numbers, but not so great with people. He is great on the business side, and can make up for the shortfalls of Danielle. Patrick just needs to work on his personal skills, much like Kelly. Andy prioritizes customer service, and has been successful in doing so. If you cannot keep the customers happy and coming back, the restaurant will suffer.

3) How would you describe Andy’s competencies? Does Andy’s leadership suggest that one does not need all three skills in order to be effective?

I believe Andy shows competencies in all three skill categories. He shows great personal skills that keep customers coming back. A good example is letting the party bring in their own cake. He also has a lot of knowledge in the job. His 25 years of experience has given him all the knowledge he needs. His problem-solving skills are also very good because he has found the recipe for success in the industry that other restaurants have not.

I believe that Andy’s leadership shows that you do not necessarily need all three skills to be successful. Saying that, I do believe there has to either be some checks and balances with other individuals who have those other skills where you are lacking. If not, you have to learn to be more well-rounded in the other skills.

Case Study 3.1 A Strained Research Team

1. Based on the skills approach, how would you assess Dr. Wood’s leadership and his relationship to the members of the Elder Care Project team? Will the project be successful?

My overall assessment of Dr. Woods consists of mixed opinions. Based on the case study, it’s apparent that he displays vast amounts of technical skillsets as his colleagues and peers often seek out his advice on research design and methodology. His overall human skills are lacking and can be seen when he states, “I wish I’d never taken this project on” and “The rest of you aren’t pulling your fair share.” These negative comments severely impact the team’s morale and output. How can one expect the team to give 100 percent when they know you don’t? I believe that this project can be successful, but not until Dr. Woods realizes the severity of his actions and reinvigorates his team.

2. Does Dr. Wood have the skills necessary to be an effective leader of this research team?

In the current form, I don’t believe that Dr. Woods has the necessary skill to lead the team to success unless he makes some drastic changes with his social judgment skills. His emotional intelligence in which he addresses the team is non-existent and counterproductive to addressing the problem. A leader needs to showcase behavior flexibility to new issues/demands. If Dr. Woods becomes self-aware of his action, I believe he can put the team back on track.

3. The skills model describes three important competencies for leaders: problem-solving skills, social judgment skills, and knowledge. If you were to coach Dr. Wood using this model, what competencies would you address with him? What changes would you suggest that he make in his leadership?

If I had to pick one competence to address with Dr. Woods, it would be the social judgment skillset. For a leader to solve problems, one must first have the ability to communicate effectively with their people. The changes I would suggest to him would first highlight and ensure he is self-aware of his actions. From here, I would discuss that his role is to lead this team not only when things are going smoothly but also when issues arise. Through such competencies as communication, persuasion, mediation, conflict resolution, and coaching, I would reassure him that he could guide his team back on track. I would also, tell him he needs to address his loss of social intelligence in the meeting.
